You control a man with a spade, who on each level must collect the required number of gems in order to open the portal, whilst avoiding death by falling rocks. Other hazards include bombs and explosive bugs. There are 19 levels in total. Inspired by a game called Rocks'n'Gems by Gerhard Rittenhofer and Manfred Tucmandl—which was itself inspired by the classic 80's game Boulder Dash—Gems'n'Rocks is a relatively fast-paced puzzle game; the first few levels are more puzzle-like, though the pace soon picks up as enemies and various usable items are introduced into the game.
